How to Recognise Manipulated Screenshots

What are manipulated screenshots?

Manipulated screenshots are edited or fabricated images of chats, bank transfers, tickets, delivery tracking or account balances.

Scammers use them as “proof” that money was sent, a parcel is on the way, or a trusted person endorsed a deal.

Because screenshots are flat images, they are easier to alter than live account views you control.

How screenshot scams work

  • Someone sends a photo of a chat or transfer that looks complete.
  • You are told to ship goods, release an item, or send money “to finish” the deal.
  • The image may use real brand layouts with changed names, amounts or dates.
  • When you check your own bank or platform account, the money or message was never there.
  • Urgency and social pressure reduce the chance you verify independently.

Warning signs

  • Blurry text, uneven fonts or misaligned UI elements
  • Dates, amounts or names that do not match other messages
  • Refusal to confirm the same detail inside the official app
  • Pressure to act before you can log in and check yourself
  • Screenshots forwarded as proof from “the bank”, “support” or a stranger
  • QR codes or links embedded in the screenshot that you are told to open immediately

What to do

  • Never release goods or money based only on a screenshot.
  • Open your bank, marketplace or delivery app yourself and check the live status.
  • Call trusted contacts using a number you already have — not a number in the image.
